Lady Cougar Softball Welcomes New Coach, Set for Season

Thursday, March 12, 2015

Poor field conditions because of the weather has canceled Rector's opening softball game scheduled Thursday at Armorel.

Lady Cougar coach David Hendrix is not certain if the game will be re-scheduled.

That moves the opener to Monday, March 16, at home against Marmaduke, but that contest also is in doubt due to the Lady Greyhounds' participation in the state basketball tournament. That also is the case with the game set here for Tuesday against Buffalo Island Central.

The next scheduled game is Thursday, March 19, against BIC.

The Lady Cougars are participating in a conference that includes Marmaduke, East Poinsett County, Cross County, Crowley's Ridge Academy, Riverside, Marked Tree and Buffalo Island Central.

Hendrix said Marmaduke and BIC are probably the teams to beat in conference play. "We are definitely going to try to somehow get in the mix and make it to regionals and then to state," the coach said. "We are certainly going to see what we can do."

The Cougar coach thinks pitching will be the team's strong suit with junior Colby Lynch returning to the mound this year. She will be assisted in pitching duties by freshman Maddie Hobbs.

When not pitching, Lynch will see action in the infield and Hobbs will play either second base or the outfield.

Handling the catching duties will be sophomore Emma Hobbs. Junior Tori Hill will play shortstop and also help in the catching department.

Senior Brittany Fair will handle the chores at first base.

Sophi Adams, a sophomore, will play some at second base and in the outfield and senior Harmony Brown will be the third baseman.

Sophomores Matison Dean and Dominique Coln will see a lot of action in the outfield. Also slated for potential outfield duties are seniors Lindsey Shelton, Alyssa Diddle and Erika Howell and freshman Hailey Ellis.

Hendrix pointed out the Cougars reached the regional tournament last year, but also had a lot of seniors on the team. He said inexperience will be the greatest concern for his team this year.
