Young But Experienced Softball Squad for Lady Mohawks

Thursday, March 12, 2015

The Piggott Lady Mohawk softball squad was scheduled to begin their season last week, but the opener was pushed back due to bad weather. The Tribe was then slated to begin the 2015 campaign under Coach Nikki Speer on Monday, March 9, at Walnut Ridge and then return home on Thursday, March 12, for a non-conference game with Marmaduke. But, thanks to the effects of Winter Storm Thor and the rains which followed this week, those are highly unlikely. Now, they're slated to begin the conference schedule on the road at Manila on Monday, March 16 as they take on the Lady Lions.

This year's squad will welcome back several starters, and key players, from last year's team, which fell in the regional tournament in Harrison to the Lady Bearkatz of Melbourne for the third year in a row. The Tribe had advanced out of the district at Corning by beating Manila, but then fell to the Lady Colts of Rivercrest in the semi-finals.

The squad did see four starters, all impact players, lost to graduation but will return the core of a talented young squad.

Those returning include junior Devyn Staples, who took the loss to Melbourne despite a strong outing. Speer will also be looking to a number of other returning players, most with a wealth of game experience. The group includes seniors McKenzie Hopkins and Caroline Rodery, junior Staples, MaKalia Beck, Shelby Morgan, Taylor Choate, Tara Vaughn and Allison Moffitt and sophomores Grayson Murray, Brooke Moore and Elizabeth Hobbs.

The Tribe will be competing once again in the 3A-3 conference, although the exit of Harrisburg and Earle leaves only the Mohawks, Corning, Rivercrest, Manila, Hoxie and Osceola as conference foes.

Later in the month of March the squad will be in action in the Portageville Tournament, being played March 20 and 21, and the following weekend they're scheduled to take part in the Lady Colt Invitational Tournament at Rivercrest.

Speer, who is assisted once again this year by Melissa Hopkins-Turner, has scheduled two non-conference home games to end the month, hosting Armorel on March 30, and the Campbell Lady Camels on Tuesday, March 31.

The Mohawks will visit Corning on April 2, and travel to Rivercrest the following week to take on the Lady Colts on Thursday, April 9. On Monday, April 13, the girls will play a double-header at Hoxie, and the following day they'll host Manila with the A and B teams taking on the Lady Lions.

On Thursday, April 16, they're slated to host the Lady Seminole of Osceola for a double-header at Independence Park. And, on Friday, April 17, they'll travel to Kennett for a non-conference game with the Lady Indians.

Monday April 20 brings with it a non-conference road game at Armorel, as they take on the Lady Tigers. And, on Tuesday, April 21, Rivercrest comes to Piggott for a conference game.

The final conference game for the squad will be April 23, as the Mohawks visit the Corning Lady Bobcats. And, they'll wrap-up the regular season at Marmaduke on April 25, as the visit the Lady Greyhounds. That weekend they'll be in district tournament play.
