After losing a full week to Winter Storm Thor, the Piggott Lady Mohawk softball was finally able to begin the 2015 campaign Monday afternoon with a conference game at Manila. And, despite being forced to practice on the pavement parking lot of the PHS gym for much of the pre-season, the Tribe was up to the challenge and notched a lopsided 13-1 victory in five innings.

Starring on the mound, and at the plate, was Lady Mohawk junior Devyn Staples. She got the nod from Coach Nikki Speer, and worked all five innings giving up just three hits while striking out six of the Lady Lions in the process.

Staples also had a strong game at the plate, going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI on the afternoon. The Tribe also got a productive day at the plate from Taylor Choate, as she went 2 for 2 and drove in another run.

With the win the Lady Mohawks begin the season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in 3A-3 conference play. Weather permitting they're slated to take part in the Portageville tournament this weekend in non-conference play. Next week they're also scheduled to be in tournament play during spring break, and are slated to play March 27 and 28, in the Lady Colt Invitational Tournament at Rivercrest.

The following week they have non-conference games with Armorel and Campbell scheduled from March 30 and 31, and they're slated to visit Corning for a conference game on Thursday, April 2.

On the other hand, the recent wet conditions have left the Mohawk baseball team well behind schedule for this year, and according to Coach David Reynolds no games are slated for this week. Due to spring break, there were no games slated for this week on the original schedule, and due to poor field conditions none of the two games already postponed may be made up.

Currently, the Tribe is scheduled to begin the regular season, and 3A-3 campaign, on Monday, March 23, with a road game at Rivercrest. On Monday, March 30, they're slated to visit the Osceola Seminole for a double-header, with the first game starting at 4 p.m. The following day, Tuesday, March 31, they're scheduled to host the Corning Bobcats in 3A-3 action. And, the squad is scheduled to take part in the annual Duel on the Diamond tournament at Paragould, set to be held beginning Thursday, April 2, and running through the middle of the month.
