Tractor Crash Claims Life of Piggott Man

Dillon McNew

A Piggott man died Saturday, March 28, at UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock from injuries he sustained in a traffic accident which occurred near Hardy on March 11. Dillon McNew, who would have celebrated his 22nd birthday Monday, was severely injured in the crash and succumbed to those injuries this past weekend.

McNew, a member of the PHS class of 2012, sustained the injuries when the tractor he was driving struck a dirt buggy being pulled by a second tractor. The accident occurred around mid-day on Wednesday, March 11, on U.S. Highway 63 just south of Hardy. According to the report submitted by Corporal Benjamin Rapert, of Troop B of the Arkansas State Police, McNew was operating a tractor belonging to CEG Construction when the accident occurred. The company's headquarters are in Pollard.

The report indicated McNew was following a second tractor, operated by Ricky Shaw of Piggott, and both were pulling two of the land leveling implements. Rapert noted in his report that Shaw had stopped his tractor as he approached a bridge to allow oncoming traffic to cross, but McNew was apparently unable to stop, and swerved left in an attempt to avoid a collision. The report indicated his right front tire impacted the rear of the dirt buggy, ejecting McNew from the tractor, and he was struck by the implement. Both tractors then slid-off the side of the highway. Luckily, Shaw was not injured in the accident.

McNew was transported from the scene by Air-Evac to UAMS, where physicians mounted a gallant attempt to save his life. But, due to the severity of his injuries their efforts were in vain, as he died Saturday surrounded by loved ones.

Family members noted they hoped the tragedy would serve to illustrate the dangers of operating farm equipment, and in light of the accident they encouraged others to observe all safety guidelines with a special emphasis on the use of seat belts.

Visitation and funeral services for Dillon McNew will be held Thursday evening, April 2, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott. The complete obituary may be found in that section of this website.
