Firefighters Battle Nimmons Blaze
Rector and Greenway firefighters responded to a house fire in Nimmons on Wednesday, April 8, but report the structure was a complete loss. Luckily, there were no injuries reported in connection with the blaze, although firefighters were hampered by strong winds in battling the fire.
According to reports from the RFD, the fire occurred at the home of Jeff and Regeana Vavak, at 261 County Road 561. Mrs. Vavak told fire investigators she was awakened from a nap just after 3 p.m. and found the home filled with smoke. In response, she and the family dog quickly evacuated the structure and firefighters were summoned to the scene. They arrived a short time later, but found the fire had already broken through the roof of the brick home and had spread throughout the structure. The report further noted the roof collapsed into the interior of the home, as the blaze was brought under control and allowed to burn itself out.
The report noted the fire apparently started in a back bedroom of the home, although the cause of the blaze was not determined.
According to Clay County OEM Coordinator Alan Vaughn, the family lost all their belongings in the fire but has received aid from the Red Cross and local churches.
Firefighters reported the blaze was brought under control around 5 p.m. and they remained on the scene until 5:30.
