Willa Hollis' hope in Christ was fulfilled on Sunday, April 26, 2015, as she passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with PSP, with her sons by her side. Willa leaves behind three sons and daughter in laws, Brian (Paula), Kent (Wendy) and Kevin (Sue). She adored her five grandchildren, Ashley-Tate, Shelby, Nathan, Toby and Summer. She is also survived by her twin sister, Wilma Atwood, as well as brothers Joe and Jerry Johnson. She was preceded in death by her soul-mate of 48 years, Dr. Gilbert Hollis, and her parents, E.C. and Maedell Johnson.
Willa was born on October 5, 1940 in Bragg City, Mo., and grew up in Greenway, Ark. She married Gilbert on Aug. 27, 1961. Willa served many years at the University of Illinois in the Astronomy Department. She was one of the founding members of Meadowbrook Community Church. Willa loved her family, loved her church and loved her friends. She was known for her joy in life, her beautiful smile and her strong faith.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at Meadowbrook Community Church. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 1 at Meadowbrook. In lieu of flowers a contribution may be given in her honor to the Dr. Gilbert Hollis Memorial Scholarship Fund through the University of Illinois Foundation.
