Lady Mohawks Perfect In Conference Play
After struggling in the early going of the season, primarily due to limited practice time because of wet field conditions, the Piggott Lady Mohawks rolled through the remainder of their conference schedule last week undefeated. In fact, the Tribe finished the 3A-3 campaign Monday afternoon at Hoxie, beating the host Lady Mustangs in a twin bill to keep their record spotless. Thursday afternoon they'll play their first round game in the district tournament at Rivercrest as the top seed.
The Tribe completed the season sweep of the Lady Colts last Tuesday, as they ran roughshod over Rivercrest 10-0 in five innings. Turning in a dominate pitching performance was junior Devyn Staples, who allowed only three hits while striking out two in notching the win.
Meanwhile, Hannah Powell and Ally Kilbreath provided much of the offensive punch, as both went 2 for 3 on the day.
On Thursday afternoon the Lady Mohawks visited Corning, and pounded their cross county hosts by a final of 10-2. Staples was once again the winning pitcher, as the squad kept their conference record intact over the Lady Bobcats.
Shelby Morgan went 3 for 3 at the plate, driving in four runs for the Mohawks in the process. Taylor Choate also had a strong game on offense, going 3 for 4 with two runs batted in, while Kilbreath added a two run homerun.
With the win the Tribe extended their conference record to 8-0.
Monday afternoon the Tribe made the trip to Hoxie to close out the conference season with a double-header with the Lady Mustangs. On the day it was all Mohawks, as they beat their hosts 18-1 in the early game and then posted an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.
The sweep netted the Mohawks a record of 10-0 in conference, as they finished the season with a spotless record in 3A-3 play. The victory also insured the team the outright season title, and the number one seed in this week's district tournament at Rivercrest.
The 3A-3 district softball tournament gets underway Thursday afternoon at Rivercrest, and luckily the weather forecast is favorable for all three days of this year's tourney.
The top seed this year goes to the Piggott Lady Mohawks, as the finished the conference schedule with a perfect 10-0 record. The first game will be played at 2 p.m. Thursday as Rivercrest and Hoxie meet, with the second game played at 4 p.m. between Corning and Osceola.
