Regional Tournament Update
The first round of regional play brought a mixed bag of results for area teams, as both the Rector and Piggott baseball squads were eliminated with losses, while the Lady Mohawks and Lady Greyhounds of Marmaduke softball teams advanced in convincing manner, and punched their tickets to the upcoming state tourney as well.
The baseball Mohawks ran into the 15-3 Warriors of Cotter in the first round following a rain delay at Harrison, and despite a strong early inning performance, fell 15-4 in six innings. Meanwhile, the Cougars took an advantage into the seventh inning against the host Bulldogs at Tuckerman, couldn't hold the lead and fell 6-5.
The Lady Mohawks rolled to a 7-1 win over Yellville-Summit in another rain-delayed game at Harrison, and will take on Valley Springs at 2:30 today, Saturday, May 9--weather permitting. Valley Springs advanced by beating Corning 15-0. In the upper half of the bracket Melbourne eliminated Rivercrest 6-2 and Manila stayed in the hunt with a 4-1 win over Green Forrest. Those two winners play at noon, with the semi-final winners facing off in the regional championship game at 2:30 on Monday. Meanwhile, the losers will play at noon on Monday for the third-fourth place seedings for the upcoming state tournament.
The Lady Greyhounds of Marmaduke had little trouble in their first round game, as they pounded the Lady Bulldogs of Tuckerman 11-1, and they'll also be playing in the 2:30 game today in the semi-finals at Tuckerman. Of course weather may be a factor, as showers and thunderstorms pushed through the region during the morning hours.
