The Piggott Lady Mohawks punched their ticket to the upcoming 3A state softball tournament late last week, as they beat Yellville-Summit 7-1 in the first round of the 3A Region 3 tourney at Harrison. On Saturday the Mohawks continued to roll, as they came from behind to beat Valley Springs 8-5. Tuesday, after enduring a full day of rain delay due to wet conditions, they took on the Lady Bearkatz of Melbourne in the regional final and fell by a final of 4-0.

Yellville-Summit

Coming off their outright district, and conference, championship the Lady Mohawks rolled into Harrison last week and their first round contest with the Lady Panthers, the fourth place finisher from their district. Behind strong pitched, and consistent hitting, the Tribe notched a decisive 7-1 victory to advance.

Junior Devyn Staples continued her dominance in the circle, as she pitched the complete game and earned the win. She also helped her own cause at the plate, as she went 2 for 3 on the day. Hannah Powell continues to have a strong spring, as she went 3 for 4 and drove in 3 of the Mohawk runs, while Tara Vaughn also made her presence felt with a bases-clearing double.

With the win the Mohawks advanced to the regional semi-finals, and an automatic bid to the 3A state tournament set for later this week in Harrison.

Valley Springs

The Tribe took on the Tigers of Valley Springs in the semi's, and despite jumping out to an early lead had to battle back late to earn the win. The Tribe plated a run in the first, two more in the fourth and another in the fifth inning as they extended their lead to 4-0 through five innings.

But, Valley Springs responded with five unanswered runs in the top of the sixth, and took a 5-4 lead into the home half of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning Powell reached on a walk, only to have the next two batters fly-out. Taylor Choate then reached base on a fielding error, prompting some late inning heroics. Allison Kilbreath then stepped to the plate and hammered a three run home run to set the final score at 8-5. Staples took care of business in the top of the seventh, and the Tribe advanced to the championship game.

Staples was once again the winning pitcher for the Mohawks, as she fanned three of the Tiger batters. She also had another good day at the plate, as she went 2 for 3 in the win.

Melbourne

The Mohawks were slated to take on Melbourne in the regional final Monday afternoon, but wet conditions pushed the start back 24 hours and the two teams squared-off on Tuesday.

Perhaps sluggish from several days in a hotel, the Tribe fell behind the Lady Bearkatz who went on to post a 4-0 win.

The Mohawks will be back in Harrison Thursday afternoon, as they have a 5:30 p.m. start time for their first round game in the 3A state softball tournament. They'll be taking on the third place finisher from Region 4, and with a win will advance to the state quarterfinals and a 2:30 p.m. contest this Friday, May 15. The semi finals are set for noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the state championship game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Bogle Park on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
