Mohawk Reunion at Hand
A large crowd of Mohawks, and former Mohawks, will be on hand this Saturday for "A Piggott Mohawk Reunion." The event is hosted by the PHS class of 1970 and is open to PHS alumni and the public. All proceeds from the first annual event will go toward scholarships for Piggott High School grads.
The first event of the day is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, with an informal gathering at the historic Spurlock gym on Garfield Avenue. The open house will be hosted by Coach Michael Harrell and the 2015 Mohawk football team and coaches, and is open to all former players.
A "tailgate" style party will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Piggott Community Center hosted by the Class of 1970 and a number of local sponsors. At 7 p.m. the program will begin with a pictorial history of Mohawk football, and some of the notables who played or coached at Piggott High School. The review will include special recognition of the first Mohawk football team, followed by biographical highlights of some of the outstanding players and their careers both at PHS and after graduation.
The evening will also include a general discussion on the history of the Mohawk football teams and some of their most successful campaigns. Featured speakers and guests include former Razorback standout and Philadelphia Eagle, Gary Adams; former Razorback defensive great Tommy Dixon; Link Fuller, formerly of the Dallas Cowboy's staff and former Mohawk coach Joe Black, who was a member of the 1964 National Champion Arkansas Razorback team.
Event planners note the evening will also include a special recognition for coaches and players who are no longer with us and a very special recognition for former head coach Carl "Zig" Williams.
Organizers have also planned a live auction of football memorabilia which will include collectibles from Dallas Cowboy hall of famers, courtesy of Fuller. Included are a replica of Roger Staubach's Super Bowl ring, a football signed by Razorback great, and current Dallas Cowboy, Darren McFadden and Dallas Cowboy mini-helmets autographed by Hall of Famers Bob Lilly and Preston Pearson.
A special Mohawk memorabilia room will also be open for viewing. And, the evening will conclude with an "open mic" opportunity for the former players to share the legacy of Mohawk football.
Tickets for the reunion are still available at $15 each, and cover all food and drinks. Those wanting to purchase tickets, or obtain more information, may contact any member of the PHS class of 1970 or may call Joe Cole at 901 246-7647.
