Melvin Arley Shepard
Melvin Arley Shepard, son of the late John Edward and Nora Jane (Brannan) Shepard, was born on May 18, 1928, in Kennett, Mo. He passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis, Tenn. He married Enola Jane Self on Oct. 1, 1947, in Kennett, and they resided in Piggott, Ark.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Enola; a son, James Edward, and wife Becky, of Fort Smith, Ark.; a daughter, Verna Jane Byrd, and husband Larry, of Springdale, Ark.; he was "Papa" to four grandsons, Matt Shepard and wife Toni of Spring, Tex., Thad Shepard and wife Kerry of Memphis, Will Shepard and wife Laurie of Memphis and Jared Byrd and wife Melanie of Springdale. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Doyle and Bill Shepard and five sisters, Marie Milburn, Della Wilburn, Ernestine Dees, Ellen Carver and Gerline Shepard
Melvin was a member of Hitt's Chapel Church of Piggott. He served in the United States Air Force and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 20, at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Kennett. Funeral Services will be held at noon in the McDaniel Chapel in Kennett, with Reverend Johnny Bogle officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kennett. Pallbearers will be James Edward Shepard, Larry Byrd, Matt Shepard, Thad Shepard, Jared Byrd and Will Shepard. Honorary pallbearers include Vernon Willie, Rex Smart, Howard Young, Lewis Cates, Nick Carlton, Lenuel Tate and Richard Claus
McDaniel Funeral Service of Kennett, Mo. is in charge of the arrangements.
