Plans are now complete for the 88th annual Piggott Fourth of July Picnic and Homecoming, set for Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4. This year the theme for the celebration, which benefits the Piggott Cemetery Association, is "Freedom, Our Heritage." Members of the board have also announced the grand marshal for this year, as local veteran Eugene Mann will have the honor of leading the annual parade.

Event organizers also report this year's featured entertainers will be the gospel group Eternal Vision, from Knoxville, Tenn., a part of Eternal Vision Ministries. They'll be performing throughout the day on Saturday, July 4, and will be featured in an extended set from 6 to 8 p.m., prior to the Miss Piggott Pageant.

Additions to the carnival midway have also been announced, as several new rides will also be featured at this year's picnic as well.

This year's festivities will get underway Friday, July 3, as the midway will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. The first of the pageants will also be held Friday evening, as Young Junior Miss, Junior Miss Piggott and Mrs. Piggott are selected. The complete pageant schedule for both days may be found elsewhere in this edition.

The parade is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, followed by the traditional opening ceremonies around 10 at the beauty revue stand. Time permitting, Enoch Richardson and his band will be performing following the opening ceremonies. Political speakers will also be featured, introduced by local attorney C.W. Knauts, with the first pageant set for 11:30 a.m. as Baby Mr. and Miss Piggott are chosen.

Additional pageants are set for the early afternoon, and at 4 p.m. the crowd will be treated to another performance by Enoch Richardson and his band, followed by a performance by Patrick Patterson and the Band around 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m. the gospel group Eternal Vision will take to the stage, followed at 8 p.m. by the Miss Piggott Pageant. The fireworks display is set for 10 p.m., followed by the cash drawing for three $5,000 prizes at 10:30.

Piggott State Bank is providing corporate sponsorship this year by providing a $500 scholarship for the winner of the Miss Piggott Pageant and by underwriting the cost of the sound system, provided by Patrick Patterson. Also providing corporate support is First National Bank, as they are sponsoring the fireworks display.

Organizers also report they're conducting a raffle for a Ruger 1911 Commander .45 caliber stainless steel handgun at the picnic. Only 300 tickets are being offered at a cost of $10 each, and the winner will be announced at the picnic grounds on Saturday, July 4. All proceeds from the raffle also benefit the Piggott Cemetery Association, and the continued upkeep of the local cemetery.

Pre-sale of cash drawing tickets are currently underway at Piggott State Bank, William's Nursery, The Treasure Chest, Fred Ort Insurance, First National Bank, Sugar Creek Country Club and Jodi Lilly's in Qulin. Armbands are $15 each in advance through Tuesday, June 30, at the Treasure Chest, Lolly's Children's Store and William's Nursery. Afterward, and the day of the picnic, armbands will be $20 each. Piggott State Bank is also giving away a number of the armbands, and those interested in winning one should visit their Facebook page. Organizers also note adult t-shirts are on sale at the Treasure Chest, while children's t-shirts are available at Lolly's Children's Store.

Organizers will be at the picnic grounds beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 28 for pre-registration. Contestants in the Mrs. and Miss Piggott pageant may also rehearse at that time. At 2:30 p.m. there will be a rehearsal for both the Young Junior Miss and Junior Miss contestants. Organizers indicated pre-registration is not required, but is appreciated, and also noted none of the rehearsals are mandatory.
