The 5K race begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, in front of Rector High School. The course will be well marked and volunteers will be placed throughout the course, which will end where it began. Helping Hands board member Shannon Haywood said there are usually over 300 participants in the event. All proceed will go to the RHS Helping Hands Foundation.
Helping Hands was begun in 2006 by Nashville music producer Bill Carter and New York Major General George Baker. Both men are alumni of the RHS class of 1953.
Helping Hands helps the Rector community by helping families with needs they cannot pay for, such as dental expenses and eye exams for students in need. The foundation also gives several scholarships to graduating RHS students every year, and helps students participate in school activities their families could not otherwise afford.
