Local Golf Teams Hit Fairways

Golf season is in full swing, as teams prepare for their district tourneys. The PHS squad has been busy since before the start of classes, and continued to hit the fairways this past week. Meanwhile, the Cougars took on BIC at Manila in mid-August, and dropped the match with the Mustangs despite a third place finish by Kade Scott.

The Mohawk golf teams hosted high school conference action at Sugar Creek Country Club last week, with players from Manila, Corning, Rivercrest and Hoxie joining the Tribe. In boy's play, the Mohawks finished third behind the Lions and the Bobcats, while the girls didn't compete in team play, although Piggott's Ashlee Vaughn was medalist. Monday afternoon the Rector golf team visited SCCC, and despite the fact the Mohawks won the match by eight strokes, Cougar standout Scott took medalist honors.

Dual Match

In girls' conference play against Hoxie, Rivercrest and Corning last week Vaughn took medalist honors at SCCC with a 45. The team win went to Corning with a 180, led by Tiffany Ramsey with a 54, while Rivercrest was second with a 184, led by Madison Goble with a 57, and Hoxie was third with a 188, led by Hunter Holt with a round of 50.

In boy's play, the Mohawks were third with a 139, as Manila took the win with a 133 and Corning shot a 137. Rounding out the match were the Rivercrest Colts, as they were fourth with a 142.

Medalist honors went to Seth Robinson of Corning and Blaine Richardson of Rivercrest, as they both shot rounds of 42. Leading the way for the Mohawks was Noah May and Trey Gossett, as they both shot 45. Meanwhile, Isaac Langley shot a 49 and Reese Gurley carded a 57.


The Cougars visited the Mohawks Monday afternoon in boy's action at Sugar Creek Country Club, and despite a strong round from Kade Scott the hosts took the match by a score of 154-146. Scott carded a 37 to take medalist honors on the day, three strokes ahead of Piggott's Noah May and his round of 40.

Rounding out the score for the Mohawk's-Gossett and Gurley each shot a 53 while Langley had a round of 56. Also playing for Piggott was Nathan Holcomb with a round of 62 while Luke Carpenter shot a 57.

Along with Scott's round of 37, the Cougars got a 51 from Lawson Ford, while Hunter Ellis and Evan Dooley both carded rounds of 66, Garrett Burns shot 67 and Trey Rodden shot a 68.

According to Cougar Coach Matt Mills, the tentative schedule for the RHS golf team calls for them to play at Sage Meadows on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Manila on Monday, Sept. 14, at Corning on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and at Sage Meadows on Thursday, Sept. 17.

As for Alan Rabjohn's Piggott Mohawk teams, the boys are scheduled to play at Batesville on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and both teams will be in action on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Corning. On Monday, Sept. 14, they'll be playing at home at SCCC, and the following day, Tuesday, Sept. 15, will visit Corning. The girl's district will be played Thursday and Friday, Sept. 17 and 18, at Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott. The following Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 21 and 22, the boy's district will be played at Batesville.
