Lady Mohawks Split Conference Sets
The Piggott Lady Mohawks extended their season record to 3-1 in the past week, splitting three conference matches. Meanwhile, the junior girls continue to improve as they're still looking for their first win of the young season.
Coming off their season-opening non-conference win over Pocahontas, the Lady Mohawks hosted 3a-Northeast foe Walnut Ridge on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and fell in straight sets. The Lady Bobcats took the first set 25-23, then cruised in the second and third 25-13 and 25-11, as the Tribe fell to 1-1.
Leading the way for the Mohawks was Colby Crossfield, as she was 11 of 12 from the service line with 3 aces in the loss.
The junior girls also dropped their match with the Bobcats, as they fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Lady Mohawk senior squad rebounded from their loss to Walnut Ridge on Thursday, Aug.27, and swept the Lady Falcons of Crowley's Ridge Academy in conference play at PHS. The Tribe took the first set 25-20, and then held on 25-23 and 25-23 to take the win.
Crossfield had another big night at the service line, going 15 for 15 with one ace. She also notched a total of 11 assists, and four kills, in the victory. Meanwhile, MaKalia Beck was 10 of 11 serving, with 3 aces and 8 kills; Hannah Powell was 12 of 14 from the service line, with 2 aces and 5 assists, and Megan Johnson was a perfect 6 for 6 serving, with 3 kills and 5 assists to her credit.
The junior and senior squads returned to conference play Tuesday, Sept. 1, as they hosted Cedar Ridge at PHS. The senior squad took the win in five sets, while the junior girls dropped their match and dropped to 0-4.
Following a break for the Labor Day holiday, they'll return to conference action on Thursday, Sept. 10, with a road set at Hoxie. The following Saturday, Sept. 12, the senior squad will be traveling to Harrison to take part in the annual "Slamfest" tournament. On Monday, Sept. 14, the senior team is scheduled to visit the Kennett Lady Indians, and on Tuesday, Sept. 15, all teams will be in action as the Midland Mustangs visit Piggott High School.
