Second year quarterback Trey Gossett had a huge game for the Junior Mohawks Thursday night at Parker Field, guiding the squad to a 28-7 non-conference win over the Westside Warriors. The freshman signal-caller had three touchdowns, two fumble recoveries and an interception as the Tribe rolled in their season opener.

The Mohawks kicked-off to begin the ballgame, and both teams had drives which stalled in the early going. But, following Gossett's first fumble recovery, the Piggott squad put together a strong drive behind the running of Mason Tillman and Lane Buchanan. Gossett capped the drive with a five yard touchdown run, although the two-point conversion attempt was no good.

Westside answered with a score of their own later in the half, as they punched it in from 22 yards out. But, their two-point conversion attempt was also short, and the score stood at 6-6.

Late in the half the Mohawks broke the deadlock, as Gossett broke off a 40 yard touchdown run on an interception for his second of the night, he then added the two point conversion, and the Tribe enjoyed a 14-6 lead.

The Mohawks padded their lead in the third quarter, as Mason Tillman took it in from 15 yards out and Gossett added the two point conversion to make it a 22-6 contest. And, with 6:19 to go in the contest Gossett scored once more, from 26 yards out, although the conversion attempt was no good.

The Mohawks dominated the ballgame, recording 300 yards in total offense while holding the Warriors to just 95. Top rusher was Tillman with 83 yards on 11 carries, and one touchdown while Gunner Shaw had 76 yards on 12 carries, Gossett finished with 73 yards on 8 carries, and three touchdowns, Buchanan had 37 yards on 6 carries and Jacob Scott had 16 yards on 4 carries. Gossett was 2 of 6 passing, with no touchdowns or interceptions.

On the defensive side of the football, Isaac Langley, Dylan Bellers, Buchanan and Gossett all had three tackles each.

The junior Mohawks will be on the road this Thursday evening, as they visit the Paragould Rams in non-conference play. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
