PHS Tennis Teams in Action
The Mohawk tennis teams took part in a conference tri-match with Harding Academy and Corning last Monday, splitting with the Lions and sweeping the Bobcats. The girls team took their set with Harding Academy 4-2, while the boys fell 2-6. In play against Corning the girls won 5-1 while the boys took their match 4-1. On Thursday both squads visited Corning, with the girls splitting 3-3 while the boys won 5-3.
The Lady Mohawks swept singles play against Harding Academy, a team which qualified for state last year. Emilee Seegraves beat Alli Morris 6-0, Devyn Staples downed Caily Moore 6-1 and Meghan Woodard defeated Kathryn Wilkins 6-2. In doubles play Madison Crittenden and Woodard beat Kille Catty 6-0 while Kourtney Chadwell and Ambrea Massey fell to Laferney and Cox 6-0 and Alex McDaniel and Britany Hobbs fell to Taylor and Harrell 6-3.
Meanwhile the boys were swept in singles action, with Tyler Peters falling to state qualifier John David Stewart 6-0; Caleb Higgins beaten by state qualifier Brett Kernodle 6-3; Caleb Welborn falling to Charles Yang 6-1 and then again to the same opponent 6-5.
In doubles play, Piggott's Kyle Allman and Quinton Mauldin beat Reid Pace and Ben Moore 6-1 and Nicholas Harris and Beau Jett downed Hayden Bailey and Mason Leferney 6-4. Meanwhile, Carrington McDaniel and Josh Lyman were beaten by Pace and Moore 4-5 (5-7) and Kaleb Chadwell and Isaac Morris fell to Bailey and Leferney 4-0.
The Lady Mohawks swept Corning in singles play at Jonesboro, with Seegraves downing Kaitlyn Carpenter 6-1, Staples beating Allison Landreth 6-0 and Alex McDaniel edging Ashlyn Bettis 7-6(9-7). In doubles play, Crittenden and Woodard beat state qualifiers Carpenter and Davis 6-2 and Hobbs and Staples downed Landreth and Rachel Jordan 6-3 while Chadwell and Massey fell to Johnson and Couch 6-3.
For the boy's Higgins beat Peyton Smith 7-5 in singles play, and in doubles action Allman and Mauldin beat Briney and Curtis 6-0, Harris and Jett downed the same duo 6-4 and Baber and Noah Fuller beat Jay Leach and Peyton Smart 6-1.
The Lady Mohawks split with the Lady Bobcats at Corning last Thursday, going 3-2 in singles and 2-3 in doubles play. In singles action it was Seegraves over Lambretta 6-1 and Staples over Bettis 6-0 while Massey fell to Jordan 7-6(7-2). In doubles play, Crittenden and Woodard beat Johnson and Couch 6-3, while Chadwell and McDaniel fell to Davis and Carpenter 6-4 and Chadwell and Hobbs were beaten by Jordan and Landreth 6-0.
Meanwhile, the boys took their match with the Bobcats. In singles play, Peters downed Hovis 6-2 and McDaniel beat Leach 6-1, while Higgins fell to Smith, Lyman was downed by Curtis and Baber was beaten by Smith as well.
In doubles play, Allman and Mauldin handled Curtis and Ridge Briney 6-1, Harris and Jett downed the same duo 6-2 and Fuller and Kaleb Chadwell beat Leach and Smith 6-3.
The boys and girls teams were scheduled to take on Brookland and Earle in a non-conference tri-match at Jonesboro on Monday, Sept. 21, and were slated to play against Pocahontas and Highland, in Pocahontas, on Tuesday. Scores and stats were not available as of press time.
The girls team is slated to host Caruthersville this Thursday, Sept. 24, and all teams will travel to Jonesboro next Monday, Sept. 28 for a tri-mach with Harding Academy and Harrisburg.
