Martha Gookin, 78, of Piggott, Ark., passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro, Ark.
She was born on August 20, 1937, in Rector, Ark., and was the daughter of the late Ollie Petty and Bertha (Thornton) Petty Lewis.
She was united in marriage to Wallice Gookin on Feb. 25, 1954, and to this union two children, Kathie and Gary, were born.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Wallice Gookin; her daughter, Kathie Dalton; her parents; a son-in-law, Jim Dalton and two brothers, Dallas and Barney Petty.
Martha was of the Baptist Faith and continued to witness in her final days. She spent her life caring for others.
Survivors include her son, Gary Gookin and his wife Lorre of Jonesboro; five grandchildren, David Dalton and Kristie of Jonesboro, Jason Dalton and Becca of Brookland, Erica Gookin Collins and Chris of Jonesboro, Emma Gookin Mason and Taylor of Jonesboro and Alex Gookin of Jonesboro; eight great-grandchildren, Chase, Katelyn, and Kiersten Dalton, Kinsler, Kolby, and Keaton Collins and Makynlee and Jett Dalton; four sisters, Mary Rose Wortheren of Salem, Ark., Viola Bolton of Salem, Ark., Edna Shaw of Greenway, and Della Jackson of Piggott; a brother, Buryl Petty of Greenway, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the Hoggard amd Sons Chapel with Bro. Loy Culver officiating. Burial is in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway. Pallbearers are Jeff Gookin, Mike Gookin, Andy Dixon, Billy Joe Hardin, Richard Petty and Michael Chronister. Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
