3A State Volleyball Tournament Continues at PHS

The first day of the 3A state volleyball tournament at Piggott High School featured some great action, and a major upset, as the field of 16 was reduced to eight quarter-finalists.

Advancing to meet today at noon were Paris and Harding Academy, after they eliminated Cutter-Morning Star and Green Forest. Meanwhile, Hoxie and Conway Christian will play in the 2 p.m. game. after they dispatched West Fork and Jessieville in round one.

The 4 p.m. will feature Walnut Ridge against the Bergman Lady Panthers. Bergman, which has hosted several of the more recent state tourneys at Harrison, posted a huge upset of top ranked Episcopal Collegiate in four sets including a thrilling 31-29 finale. As for the Lady Bobcats, the beat Alpena in four sets.

The late game, at 6 p.m., will feature Atkins and Booneville, in the final semi of the day. Booneville beat Lee to advance while Atkins sent the CRA Lady Falcons home to Paragould.

The semi-finals will be played at 3 and 5 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 29, on the floor of the PHS gym. Admission is $5 and state tournament t-shirts are on sale, as well.
