Piggott Christmas Fest

Vendors and parade entrants are still being sought for the upcoming Piggott Christmas Fest. The Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce will host this year's Christmas Fest from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6. The afternoon's activities will wrap-up with the annual Christmas Parade, set for 4.

The popular holiday event will also include the traditional drawings, free hot dogs for the kids and a performance by the "Swinging Mohawk" jazz band.

"Santa Claus will be in his house on the square from 1 to 3:30 p.m. when he has to leave to ride in the parade," noted chamber secretary Jan Glover. "And, thanks to the generosity of First National Bank, we'll be serving free hot dogs to kids." Glover also noted there will be toy drawings held throughout the afternoon--but, you must be present to win.

A longtime holiday favorite in the Piggott area, the Christmas Fest was moved to Sunday afternoon two years ago due to the effects of a winter storm. Based on the response, the chamber decided to continue to have the holiday festival on the first Sunday of each December and the response has been positive.

"Many of the downtown businesses will also be open for the afternoon," Glover added. "And, once again this year there will also be a variety of vendors set-up around the square, offering unique holiday gifts and specialty items."

The traditional Christmas Parade is set to begin at Piggott Elementary School at 4 p.m. and will travel west on Main Street to the square. Currently entries are being recruited, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. This year's parade categories include best float, best bicycle, best utility vehicle, best antique car, best antique tractor, best motorcycle and best horse, or horse and buggy. A prize will also be awarded to the best box from among the entries from the PHS Art Class. The boxes, which represent local businesses, have become a favorite part of the annual parade. This year's parade will also include the award-winning PHS Marching Mohawk band.

"We encourage organizations, classes and individuals to build a float for this year's parade," Glover added. "Line-up will be held at 3:30 in the elementary school parking lot. If you want to enter, just be there."

Following the parade there will be drawings for four bicycles for kids age 14 and under, and you must be present to win. The bikes were donated by Piggott State Bank, and the drawing will be held at the band stand.

Those wanting additional information on being a vendor, entering the parade or the Christmas Fest in general may contact Glover by calling 870 598-3167. She may also be reached by email at or by stopping by the chamber office in the depot during regular business hours.

Rector Christmas Parade

The annual Rector Christmas Parade and Reception is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3.

The event is sponsored each year by the Rector Area Chamber of Commerce.

Beginning in downtown Rector, the parade route then follows the highway until it concludes near the community center. That is the location of the reception, which includes Christmas music by the Rector Public Schools music department.

Cookies and hot chocolate are served at the reception.

The chamber will present $100 to the best float in the parade and $25 for the best-decorated street ornament.

Persons or groups wanting to participate in the parade may telephone event coordinator Christina Boyd at 595-2300.
