Pre-Holiday Tournament Results
Piggott High School hosted the annual Pre-Holiday Tournament last week, with a total of 18 games played over the course of five days. The bracket included the junior and senior boy's teams from Piggott, Ridgefield Christian, Trumann, Brookland, Nettleton and Westside.
Saturday's schedule included the championship games in both divisions, along with the consolation finals and third place games. And, when the dust had cleared Nettleton had claimed the junior championship while Westside took the senior title. As for the Mohawks, the junior boys took the consolation final with a win over Ridgefield Christian while the senior boys fell to Brookland in the third place game.(see additional story this section)
Top seeded Nettleton drew a bye in the first round of the junior high bracket, and awaited the winner of the Piggott-Westside first round game. That contest went to the Warriors, 44-28, sending the Tribe into the consolation bracket. In other first round contests it was Brookland over Harrisburg 51-25 and Trumann downed Ridgefield Christian 57-25.
In the championship bracket, Nettleton advanced over Westside 52-24 while Brookland got by Trumann 52-42 in their semi-final. Meanwhile, in the consolation bracket it was Ridgefield Christian in an upset of Harrisburg, 39-27.
This set up the finals on Saturday, with the Mohawks squeezing out a 37-33 win over the Warriors of Ridgefield Christian in the consolation final. Meanwhile, Westside edged Brookland 32-29 in the third place game, and Nettleton overwhelmed Trumann 65-41 to take the title.
The Nettleton Raiders were also the top seed in the senior bracket, and drew a bye in the first round of play. Meanwhile, the Mohawks beat Trumann 69-64 in their first round game, and moved into the championship semi-finals. In the lower half of the bracket, Brookland sent Ridgefield Christian into the consolation bracket with a 62-22 win over the Warriors, while Westside easily handled Harrisburg 65-26, as Rico Mayo scored 40 for the other Warriors.
In the consolation semi-finals, Trumann got a bye in the upper half of the bracket, while the Hornets of Harrisburg eliminated Ridgefield Christian 64-49 to advance to the consolation final. Meanwhile, in the championship semis it was Westside over Brookland 42-28, while the Tribe fell to Nettleton 51-32.
In the finals on Saturday, Harrisburg held-on against Trumann 52-47 to take the consolation final. Meanwhile, the Mohawks dropped the third place game to Brookland 42-34. And, in the championship game it was Westside, paced by Mayo's 29 points, as they downed the Raiders 66-60 to take the title.
