Piggott Schools Spelling Bee Held
The Piggott School District spelling bee was conducted Friday, Dec. 11, in the PES cafeteria. A total of 20 students from fourth through eighth grade competed, and an alternate from all five classes was also present.
In keeping with a longstanding tradition, the bee was sponsored by Piggott State Bank. Afterward, the top four finishers received a $20 prize, while the other 16 competitors and the five alternates received a $10 prize. On hand to make the presentation was Shawn Parker, from PSB.
Fourth grade participants were Ava Baggett, Rylea Blascoe, Luke Felks, Charles Motzleus and Kaiden Scudder. The fifth grade group included Madison Arenaz, Natalie Blake, Alyssa Blair, Amber Fenton and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves. The sixth graders were Mary Lucas, Skylar Johnson, Devon Matheny, Tyson Peters and Jadyn Thompson. The seventh graders were Madison Blackwell, Tanner Dixon, Levi Laster, Aidrey Little and Landen Moore. And the eighth grade group included Cooper Harris, Catie Hill, Jolie Owen, Holden Tarno and Maggie Williams.
At the end of the competition, this year proved to be a sweep for the fifth grade in the top three spots, while the alternate is a sixth grader. The top three, who advance to the county bee, were first place Madison Arenaz, second place Natalie Blake and third place Shawn-Hudson Seegraves. This year's alternate is Skylar Johnson.
The Clay County spelling bee will be held in Rector in January, with the winner advancing to the state bee next spring.
