Lady Mohawks Split in Kell Classic Contests

The Piggott Lady Mohawks advanced into the second round of the Kell Classic at Swifton on Saturday, easily handling the Lady Red Devils of Augusta. Wednesday evening they dropped a 51-31 loss to Hoxie in the second round.

Piggott used a 10-2 run to end the first quarter taking a lead they extended after each quarter on their way to a 55-39 win over Augusta in opening round play of the Kell Classic in Swifton.

The Lady Red Devils got on the board first with a basket inside making it 2-0. Piggott's MaKalia Beck answered with an inside score to make it 2-2. Augusta scored back to back baskets to take a 6-2 lead before Devyn Staples made a lay up and Beck hit one of two free throws to make it 6-5 Augusta with 2:08 left. The Lady Red Devils scored down low making it 8-5 only to see Piggott get a score from Beck inside, a three-pointer from Staples and a coast to coast lay up from Braelyn Rhodes giving the Lady Mohawks a 12-8 lead at the end of one.

Piggott opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to push their lead to 21-8. Staples and Rhodes hit back to back jumpers followed by a steal and lay up from Beck and a three-pointer from Colby Crossfield. Augusta scored inside before Staples and Rhodes each hit one of two free throws to make it 23-10 with 3:19 left before halftime. The Lady Red Devils scored again inside making it 23-12 before Piggott got a three-pointer from Crossfield and two free throws from Staples to make the score 28-12 Lady Mohawks. Augusta hit a jumper with just over a minute to play and Piggott got a stick back from Beck and two free throws from Staples to take a 32-14 lead in the half.

Staples scored inside between Augusta baskets early in the third quarter to make the score 34-18 Piggott. The Lady Mohawks got back to back scores from Murray and Beck making the score 38-18 Piggott. Augusta got a steal and lay up only to see Staples reel off the next nine points to push the Lady Mohawks' lead to 47-20 with 2:32 left in the quarter. Staples had a basket down low, hit two free throws, converted an old-school three-point play and finished with a steal and lay up. Beck hit one of two free throws as Augusta hit one of two free throws making the score 48-21 headed to the final quarter.

The Lady Red Devils opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run to make the score 50-33 with 2:58 left in the game. Madison Pool scored inside for Piggott's only score during the run. Beck hit two free throws for Piggott to make it 52-33 Lady Mohawks with 2:36 left in the game. Augusta hit two free throws and scored off an offensive rebound to make it 52-37 Piggott. Rhodes hit one of two free throws and Grayson Murray scored inside before the Lady Red Devils got a basket inside setting the final score at 55-39 Piggott.

"We came out very sluggish in the first quarter," Piggott head coach Chase Halbrook said after the game. "We picked it up in the second and third quarters and looked better," Halbrook added.

Staples led all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Mohawks. Beck finished with 14 points as Rhodes and Crossfield each added six points. Murray tossed in four points and Pool chipped in two points.

With the loss to Hoxie, the Mohawks will be idle until Monday as they're scheduled to host the Manila Lady Lions in 3A-3 conference play.
