Lady Mohawks Stumble at Hoxie
The Piggott Lady Mohawks swung back into action Monday night, as they traveled to Hoxie and dropped a conference set to the Lady Mustangs. The junior girls fell in a lopsided decision, while the senior girls put up a strong fourth quarter effort but fell short.
The senior teams were meeting for the third time this year, as the Lady Mustangs had taken the earlier conference meeting at PHS and a non-conference game in the Kell Classic. Monday night the Tribe got off to a slow start, scoring in single figures in both the first and second quarters, and despite a late-game surge fell short 58-46.
Leading the way for the Mohawks was Braelyn Rhodes with 26 points, with 11 of those coming in the fourth. Rhodes also connected on 3 three-point baskets and converted on 7 of 11 chances at the free throw line.
Also in double figures for the Tribe was senior guard Devyn Staples with 13, with 7 of those points coming in the final frame. Rounding out the Piggott effort were MaKalia Beck and Grayson Murray with 3 each and Colby Crossfield with a free throw
With the loss they fall to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in 3A-3 conference play.
Last Thursday night's conference game at Rivercrest fell victim to the winter storm, although it has not been rescheduled as of press time. The Lady Mohawks are currently scheduled to host Corning this Thursday, Jan. 28, and will visit the Manila Lady Lions next Monday, Feb. 2. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, they're slated to host the Lady Indians of Hayti, Mo., with only the senior squad in action.
The junior girls also dropped their game at Hoxie, falling 30-15. Taylor Seal led the offense with 6 while Graci Patterson had 5 points, and was 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. Rounding out scoring were Maddie Reeves and Claire Bellers, with 2 points each.
The junior girls are also slated to be in action Thursday at Corning, and at home Monday night against Manila, in conference play.
