Lady Cougars Post Conference Wins
The Lady Cougars pulled-off a pair of great conference wins Monday night as they travelled to Cross County and beat the Thunderbirds 47-38 and 29-13.
The senior ladies played a sound defense throughout the entire game allowing, them to pull a 47-38 win over the Tbirds. The win extends their record to 9-10 overall and 6-5 in conference.
"The girls started off slow and didn't shoot well, but shooting got much better in the second half," Coach Matt Dean said.
The Tbirds took the first two quarters 10-7 and 21-19, but the Cougars stepped up and dominated the second half outscoring their hosts to take a 35-31 in the third by outscoring Cross County 28-17 in the frame.
Leading scoring for the Cougars was Matison Dean posting 18. Also in double figures were Colby Lynch with 12 and Tori Hill with 10 while Sophie Adams had 5 and Dominique Coln scored 2.
The junior ladies had fouling trouble early on, "but played a good defense and offense," Dean said.
Both teams started out evenly in scoring ending the first quarter 7-7, but the young lady Cougars picked up momentum in the second and led 18-8 at the break and 29-11 entering the final frame.
It was a big game for Mylessa Gant posting 18, more than any other player in the game. Other scoring for Rector was Sawyer Hendrix 4, Shianne Rients 2, Michaela Rients 2, Ryleigh Laden 2 and Gabby Clark 1. The junior team is 5-11 for the season and 3-8 in conference.
The ladies travel to East Poinsett County Thursday night where Dean said, "we will have to play well to have a good chance to win." EPC has already beaten Rector twice this season.
