Prominent Rector Businessman Byron Underwood Dies at 85
Byron Morris Underwood, 85, of Rector, a prominent businessman, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, at General Baptist Nursing Home in Campbell, Mo.
He was owner and operator of Underwood Furniture Store, and a leader in the downtown retail community in Rector for many years, until he was no longer able to work due to health reasons.
Underwood also served on the Clay County Central School Board for several years, including a term as president. He was very active in community endeavors and was well-regarded by all those he came in contact with, including his many loyal customers throughout the area.
He was a member of the Rector Baptist Church in Rector. Underwood also served in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Korean War.
He was born Aug. 26, 1930, in Piggott to the late Oscar and Freida (Stallings) Underwood.
Visitation and funeral were held Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the First Baptist Church in Rector. Burial was in Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. A complete obituary appears elsewhere
