Lady Mohawks Mark Senior Night
The Piggott Lady Mohawks marked senior night on Thursday, but dropped the contest to the Lady Seminoles of Osceola 54-42. Playing shorthanded due to a head injury to senior guard Devyn Staples, the Tribe struggled despite a sparking 30 point night from sophomore standout Braelyn Rhodes.
Prior to the varsity contest the Lady Mohawks of the class of 2016 were recognized and honored with the traditional festivities. This year there are three seniors on the varsity squad, including Staples, MaKalia Beck and Ambrea Massey.
The first half of play was fairly even for the two squads, as the Mohawks enjoyed a slender 9-7 lead after the first quarter. And, the second quarter was much the same, as the Tribe edged the Seminoles 9-8 in the frame, and took an 18-15 lead into the locker room at the half.
But, the second half was a different matter as Osceola came out and outscored the Tribe 17-10 in the third as they took a 32-28 advantage into the fourth quarter. And, down the stretch the visitors maintained the lead, and made the majority of their free throws, as they took the final frame 22-14 en route to the final.
In addition to Rhodes' 30, the Tribe could only muster another dozen points with Grayson Murray scoring 4, Colby Crossfield fouling out with a single 3-pointer, Massey contributing 3 while Beck finished with a field goal to her credit. As a team the Tribe was 8 of 15 from the free throw line, with Rhodes responsible for all the points from the line. Meanwhile, the Lady Seminoles were 14 of 18 from the charity stripe.
With the loss the Lady Mohawks fall to 12-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
In preparation for next week's 3A-3 district tourney at Rivercrest the Tribe has three games set for this week with non-conference opponents. Tuesday night they traveled to Walnut Ridge to take on the Lady Bobcats in a twin-set with the senior boys. Thursday night they'll be on the road at Rector for another twin-bill with the senior boys as they visit the Lady Cougars for the annual senior night at RHS. And, Friday evening Coach Chase Halbrook has scheduled a game at Bay, as the squad will tune-up against the 1A powerhouse Lady Yellow Jackets.
