Cougars Fall in District

Rector stayed close for most of the first quarter before Riverside opened an eight point lead and expanded on that lead after each quarter on their way to a 64-47 win in the 2A-3 senior high district tournament in Marked Tree.

Lawson Ford gave Rector an early 2-0 lead with a basket in the paint as Riverside cut the lead to 2-1 with one of two free throws from Braden Overman. Danny Hager hit a runner in the lane for the Cougars before Grant Mason made a three-pointer, Jon Milligan hit a jumper in the lane and Luke Baker scored inside for the Rebels to make it 8-4 Riverside. Kirk Beshears hit a three-pointer for Rector to make it 8-6 Rebels before Riverside got a jumper and three-pointer from Gavin Stone before Baker added a stick back basket with ten seconds left to make the score 15-7 Riverside after one.

Sam Simmons hit a three-pointer for Rector to open the second quarter scoring as Baker scored inside for Riverside to make it 17-10 Rebels. Simmons hit another three-pointer before Riverside got a fast break lay up from Overman, one of two free throws followed by a three-pointer form Baker to make the score 23-13 Riverside at the half.

Huston Highfill scored inside for Rector to make the score 23-15 Rebels before the teams combined to hit eight straight three-pointer. Riverside's Stone and Rector's Hager traded three-pointers before Overman and Hager traded three-balls to make the score 29-21 Riverside. Mason hit a three and Baker hit back to back three-balls for the Rebels before Ford hit a three-pointer for Rector to make the score 38-24 Riverside. Stone scored inside for the Rebels and Beshears hit a jumper for the Cougars before Riverside got one of two free throws from Milligan and a three-ball from Baker to make it 44-26 Rebels. Garrett Buck hit two free throws with six seconds left making the score 44-28 Riverside at the end of three.

Riverside got inside baskets from Stone and Milligan before Stone scored off the fast break to make it 50-28 with just over a minute gone in the fourth. Highfill scored on back to back offensive rebounds for the Cougars to make it 50-32 only to see Riverside score the next 11 points. Baker hit a three-ball from the top of the key, Overman drove in for a lay up and made one of two free throws after an intentional foul on Rector to make it 56-32. Baker hit two free throws, Overman hit a jumper in the lane before adding one of two free throws to increase the Rebels lead to 61-32 Riverside. Beshears hit a three-pointer for Rector as Hayden Carr answered with a three-pointer for Riverside to make the score 64-35. Case Watson scored the next eight points for the Cougars with a three-pointer, a basket inside and another three-pointer to make the score 64-43 Riverside. Easton Tracy hit back to back baskets for Rector setting the final score at 64-47 Rebels.

Beshears, Watson and Hager led Rector in scoring with eight points each as Simmons and Highfill each adding six points. Ford netted five points, Tracy tossed in four points and Buck chipped in two points.

Baker led all scorers with 24 points for Riverside followed by Stone with 14 points and Overman with 12 points. Mason finished with six points, Milligan had five points and Carr scored three points.
