Mohawks Set for State
The Piggott Mohawks dropped the consolation championship of the 3A Region 3 basketball tournament on Saturday, falling to Valley Springs 65-35.
After a pair of back-to-back contests the previous two evenings, the Tribe looked flat in the 1:30 p.m. start and the Tigers took advantage of the opportunity to improve their seeding in the upcoming state tourney.
Saturday evening the Osceola Seminoles continued their late-season drive, beating Marshall 61-46 in the boy's final. In the girl's championship it was Mt. View in an upset of Valley Springs 53-51 in a battle of the first and fourth seeded conference members from 3A-1 East.
In the girls consolation final earlier on Saturday, Bergman got by Melbourne 57-47 as all four finalist were from the same conference, as all of the 3A-3 teams were eliminated in the first round.
The Mohawks will face Charleston, top seed from 3A-Region 1, at 2:30 Tuesday, at Jessieville High School. And, with a win would advance to play the winner of Wednesday's Harding Academy-Prescott game at 8:30 Thursday evening. The semi-finals are all Saturday and the finals will be played the following weekend in the Hot Springs Convention Center.
At the 2A-1 North at Imboden Saturday EPC beat Cross County 69-54 in the boy's consolation while host Sloan-Hendrix beat Tuckerman 59-45 in the girl's third-fourth place seeding game.
Saturday evening the Earle Bulldogs continued their roll, pounding Marked Tree 71-41 in the boy's final. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs made it a double championship evening as they beat Riverside 47-33 in their final.
As the top seeds from the local regional they'll be playing in the first two games of this year's 2A state at Marmaduke High School. The boys will take on Mountain Pine at 1 p.m. with the girls to face KIPP Delta at 2:30.
