Coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent history, the Piggott Lady Mohawk softball squad began their 2016 campaign Tuesday afternoon at Walnut Ridge with a one-run loss. With only one senior lost to graduation from last year's state tournament qualifier, the Tribe will look to once again dominate the 3A-3 conference with an eye toward the postseason.

With a load of young talent on the bench, Coaches Nikki Speer and Melissa Turner enjoyed a strong 2015 campaign, as the Mohawks swept conference play undefeated and rolled through the 3A-3 tourney. Behind strong pitching and good offense, they advanced to the regional final at Bergman, only to lose a rain-delayed championship game.

After pounding Yellville-Summit in the first round of the regional 7-1, the Tribe posted a come from behind win over Valley Springs 8-5 in the semi only to have the championship game with Melbourne pushed back a day due to weather. In the final the road weary Mohawks fell behind early and dropped a 4-0 decision.

But, by virtue of their regional runner-up finish the Tribe drew third seeded Genoa Central in the bottom half of the 3A state tourney bracket, which was also played at Harrison.

The Lady Dragons got a strong pitching performance from Bailey Flournoy, as they held the Tribe to just one unearned run on two hits and one walk over seven innings as they took the contest 9-1.

For the upcoming campaign the majority of last year's key components will once again be in place, with a few new additions to round-out the effort.

The first home game for the Tribe is set for next Tuesday, March 8, as they're slated to host the Highland Rebels in non-conference play. Conference play is slated to begin on Thursday, March 10, as the Hoxie Lady Mustangs visit Independence Park. Then, on Saturday, March 12, they're slated to take part in the Lady Ram Playday at Paragould High School.

Conference play continues on Monday, March 14, with a home set against the Manila Lady Lions, and on March 18 and 19 the varsity team will take part in the Brookland Tournament, followed on March 22, by the Rivercrest Classic for the varsity team.

On Monday, March 28, the Tribe will visit Armorel for non-conference play, and on Thursday, March 31, they'll host the Corning Lady Bobcats in conference action.

The schedule continues on Monday, April 4, with games at Marmaduke, and the following day the Tribe is set to visit Hoxie. Thursday, April 7, they'll host the Lady Colts of Rivercrest and on Monday, April 11, a road set is scheduled at Manila.

On Tuesday, April 12, the Tribe will visit Osceola, and on April 14, the Lady Tigers of Armorel will visit Independence Park. And, the next day the Mohawks will host the Kennett Lady Indians.

The Lady Greyhounds of Marmaduke will visit Piggott on April 18, in non-conference play. And, the following day the Mohawks will visit Rivercrest. The final conference game of the season is set for Thursday, April 21, as the Mohawks visit Corning. The following week they'll be back at Corning, as the Lady Bobcats host the 3A-3 district tournament.
