Cougars Notch Second Win of Season
The Rector Cougars won their second baseball game of the season Monday, defeating visiting Armorel, 7-6 in Rector.
"I'm most happy with our defense," Rector coach Robert Dorman said. "Armorel has been to the 1A state championship twice, winning it once, and we made all our routine plays and some difficult plays."
Sam Westbrook got the win on the mound, striking out four in 3 1/3 innings. Hunter McNeely threw 2 2/3 innings, striking out two. Westbrook walked six batters, but got two hits of his own. Garrett Buck got two hits, one RBI and scored on a pop fly in the second. Danny Hager notched two RBI's and stole home on a passed loose ball. Lawson Ford had one RBI.
Sam Simmons' outfield was crucial when he threw out the potential tying run throwing at third.
"I thought we hit the ball well early, which I expected after a good scrimmage Saturday," Dorman said. "We missed a lot of good opportunities late in the game. For example, in the fourth inning, the bases were loaded and we couldn't push a run across the plate. We're going to be working on our execution late in the game and cutting down on walks."
The Cougars took on Cross County last night for their first conference game. Results will be in next week's edition of the CCTD.
