The Rector Lady Cougars opened their softball season Tuesday afternoon on their home field against Cross County.

Results will be in next week's edition of the CCTD, but coach Dave Hendrix said Monday he is looking forward to get the season started -- "they're a great group of girls, very easy to coach; they take direction well and by the end of the year they will be a team to contend with."

The team lost three players to graduation last year, but the returning players make up the majority of the team, and Hendrix said he expects the lone newcomer "to do just fine." The team finished fourth in 3-2A conference last year, but were upset in the district tournament by number five Riverside.

Senior Colby Lynch is established as the number one starter on the mound for the Cougars, and sophomore Maddie Hobbs is the relief as second pitcher. "She's done well in practice and I expect to see good things from her this year," Hendrix said. Joining them as starters are junior Emma Hobbs at catcher, ninth grade first baseman Mylesa Gant, ninth grade second baseman Colbie Robinson, senior shortstop Tori Hill, junior center fielder Sophie Adams, ninth grade left fielder Sawyer Hendrix, junior right fielder Dominique Coln and third base will be manned by whichever pitcher isn't on the mound. Other players are ninth graders Shianne Rients and newcomer junior Autumn Metcalf.

The biggest loss for the team is first baseman Brittany Fair, but Hendrix said he expects Gant to step into the position well.

Hendrix was non-committal about his outlook on Tuesday night's game against Cross County, but last year's team beat the Lady T-Birds twice.

Hendrix said games will start at 4 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. tentatively as they tend to change schedules often. Here is the schedule:

March 10 -- at Marmaduke.

March 15 -- Marked Tree.

March 17 -- at Corning.
