Piggott Fifth Grade Hoops Team Celebrates Season
Members of the fifth grade Mohawk peewee boy's basketball team posted their second consecutive winning season recently. As for the fourth grade squad, they were unbeaten on their campaign.
This season the team strengthened their schedule in an attempt to prepare for the future, and over the course of the last two seasons the squad has a record of 24-8.
This year they competed in the NEA League, which included teams from East Poinsett County, Gosnell, Manila, Nettleton-Fox Meadow and Nettleton-University Heights.
In the league tournament at EPC, Piggott defeated Gosnell 25-23 in the first round. Then, in the semi-finals the squad pulled-off the biggest upset of the season to defeat the top-seeded team from Nettleton-Fox Meadow.
It marked their first loss in two seasons, as the Piggott squad took the win 35-29.
But, in the championship game the Piggott team fell to Manila 21-19.
During the course of the season the Piggott squad swept the county rival schools of Corning and Rector for the second year in a row. Four players were also named to the All-NEA League team, including Nate Brantley, Joseph Carpenter, Jackson Howell and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves. The team is coached by Paul Seegraves and assisted by Chris Brantley.
Recently the team gathered for an awards dinner and handed-out individual honors. Aden Baggett was named most improved, Nate Brantley had the most defensive rebounds, Joseph Carpenter had the most offensive rebounds and total rebounds, Shawn-Hudson Seegraves has the most points, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, assists, steals and drawn charges.
