The Rector High School band made history by scoring a superior rating at the Region 5 concert assessment Saturday, March 12, at Jonesboro High School.

"This was the first time for the band to make such a high rating," band director Daniel Van Aalsburg said. "This competition is the harshest -udged competition in the state, so I'm extremely happy we did so well." The competition encompasses schools from all over Northeast Arkansas, including all Jonesboro schools, Highland, Salem and many more.

Over the past four years the RHS band has improved its rating one number per year, scoring a four the first year, a three the second, a two the third and finally a one this year. "The kids were ecstatic," Van Aalsburg said.

The competition is reviewed by three judges and ratings range from one to five, one being the best and five the worst. The band was given three pieces to prepare for the competition -- And of Lucia, Sea Song Fantasy and Excelcia -- but after playing their prepared concert, seven minutes is given to the band to look at a new piece of music before playing it for the judges. "We received a 1-1-2 from the judges, which is an overall rating of one," Van Aalsburg said. "We received a one for the unprepared sight reading piece as well."

The Rector School Board also expressed excitement for the supreme effort and high rating on the band's behalf during its monthly board meeting. "We are really happy for them and I definitely wanted to brag on them," school board president Jody Simmons said.

  • Congratulations to the Rector band and to the director. I remember when the band was first formed and John (Buddy) Sullivan was the director, "we" won several top prizes. Also when Jon Barbarotto (sp) was director we took several top spots among which was the mentioned NE AR competition which was held at ASU. Good memories!
