Mohawk Junior Baseball Still Undefeated
Despite the threat of rain, the Piggott Mohawk Junior High baseball squad posted their fourth win of the year Friday afternoon, notching a 7-6 win over Walnut Ridge.
Earlier in the young season the squad had posted wins over Paragould, Maynard and Rector with their contest with Valley View postponed due to rain. The team also hosted a play-day this past Saturday at Independence Park, and will be back in action on Monday, March 28, at Pocahontas.
This actually marks the second year for the junior high program, which is affilliated with the school district but not sanctioned by the AAA. The roster is comprised for players from the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
"Last year we fielded a team and played in the league, but we weren't actually members of the Northeast Arkansas League," explained Coach Billy Joe Seal. "They did let us play in the tournament though, but we ran into Corning in the first round and were eliminated."
This year Seal, along with Shawn Parker, Randy Henfling, Chris Tarno and Chris Palmer are coaching the team in a full schedule which runs through mid-May. They'll also be playing in the 22 team league tournament, which will be held May 16 to 21.
The players include several who were on last year's 11 and 12 year old Little League All Star team which qualified for the state tournament at Independence Park. On the roster are--Cooper Harris, Austin Crow, Michael Parker, Matthew Cheshire, Michael Palmer, Jackson Henfling, Drake Featherston, Quinten Baber, Austin Fair, Holden Tarno, Brandon Seal, Brent Gossett, Nate Lemmons, Brandon Palmer, Riley Henfling, Devon Mantz, Tanner Dixon, Wyatt Crabtree and Pearson Hearn.
