Lady Mohawks Advance to Regional Play

The Piggott Lady Mohawk softball team is off to Harrison this week, where they'll take part in the 3A-Region 3 softball tournament, hosted by Bergman High School. The Tribe came out of last week's district tournament at Manila as the third seeded team to advance, ahead of fourth seeded Corning and trailing runner-up Rivercrest and district champion Manila.

The Lady Mohawks advanced to the regional tourney, and a 5:30 game on Thursday, with a shutout win over Osceola in the first round. The Tribe then dropped a 10-4 decision to the Lady Colts in the semi-finals.


The Mohawks had little trouble with the Lady Seminoles of Osceola in the first round of the district, shutting them out 17-0 to advance. Hannah Powell got the start in the circle, and the win, and also went 1 for 1 on the game with a double.

Ally Kilbreath had a strong performance at the plate, as she was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a triple. Meanwhile, Taylor Choate was 2 for 2 with a double and a triple; Shelby Morgan was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles; Makalia Beck was 1 for 1 with a homerun; Devyn Staples was also 1 for 1 and Grayson Murray was 1 for 2 with a triple to her credit.


The Tribe faced Rivercrest in the second round at Manila, and dropped a 10-4 decision to the Lady Colts. Leading the offensive effort for the Lady Mohawks was Murray, as she was 3 for 4 on the day, meanwhile sophomore Braelyn Rhodes also drove in one of the Piggott runs.

In the other semi-final, the host Lady Lions squeezed by the Corning Lady Bobcats 9-8 to advance to the finals against Rivercrest. Friday afternoon the Manila girls prevailed in the championship game, as all four of the semi-finalist advanced to this week's regional at Harrison.

All four of the first round games are set for Thursday, with Corning playing Melbourne at 10 a.m. followed by Rivercrest and Yellville-Summit at 12:30 p.m.,Manila takes on Flippin at 3 p.m. and the Lady Mohawks will take on Valley Springs. around 5:30.

Baseball Update

The Piggott Mohawk baseball team fell to their cross-county rivals Thursday afternoon, in the first round of the 3A-3 district tournament at Corning. The Tribe dropped the contest to the host Bobcats 11-7 to end their 2016 campaign. In the other first round game it was Hoxie over Osceola 10-0 in five innings, setting up the semi-finals.

In the semi-final games Rivercrest beat Corning and Manila downed Hoxie, and in the championship game the Colts downed the Lions to take the top seed into this week's regional. Meanwhile, in the third-fourth place game it was Hoxie over Corning, as they'll be the third seed from 3A-3 in this week's regional at Harrison. All four teams are scheduled to be in action Thursday, with games set for 10 a.m. and 12:30, 3 and 5:30 p.m. The games are being played at the Harrison Parks and Recreation facility, and is being hosted by the Bergman Panthers.

As for the Mohawks, Tyler Peters and Jon Jones led the effort at the plate as they were both 2 for 3 on the day. Meanwhile, Trey Gossett continued to have a good spring after returning from surgery, as he was 2 for 4 in the loss.

Mason Silberstein was the winning pitcher for the Bobcats, while Clint Hovis and Jacob Price drove in two runs each in the win.
