Mohawk Track Team Third at District
The Piggott Mohawk track teams took part in the 3A-3 district meet at Pocahontas last week, and qualified several athletes for this week's state meet at Green Forest. Overall the boy's team finished third in district, behind Rivercrest and Osceola, while the girls team finished fifth, ahead of Manila and trailing Rivercrest, Osceola, Hoxie and Corning.
Only one member of the Lady Mohawks earned a spot at this week's state meet, as only the top two finishers in most events qualify. Winning the 3200 meter run for the second year in a row was Emilee Seegraves, with a time of 17:07.13.
As for the boy's team, they brought home a number of first and second place finishes including a one-two finish in both the shot put and 3200 meter run.
Logan Dixon took the 100 meter dash to qualify for yet another state meet with a time of 11.61, while Justin Goding, Gunner Shaw and Hayden Lemmons also competed but failed to place. Dixon also took second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.72, and will also compete in that race at state. Lemmons, Bret Fuller and Cade Harrell also competed at district, but finished out of the running.
The Tribe also got another strong performance by distance runner Caleb Welborn, as he dominated the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:14.45. Running fifth and sixth were Spencer Hardin and Jon Jones. Welborn also ran a close second to Hardin, as he took the win in the 3200 meter with a time of 12:03.65. Rounding out the field were Brian Horn and Brett Burns, as they finished fifth and sixth respectively.
The boy's relay teams also had a productive day, qualifying the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 for this week's state meet.
The 4x100 team ran third with a time of 45.95, and consisted of Dixon, Goding, Lemmons and Cody Crittenden. The 4x400 team was second with a time of 3:52.65 and consisted of Goding, Lemmons, Jones and Dixon. And, the 4x800 relay team finished second with a time of 9:57.84 and consisted of Burns, Shaw, Hardin and Welborn.
And, the top two finishers in the shot put were Mohawks Seth Lacey and Nate Mallard, while Fuller finished sixth and Harrell was 10th. Lacey won with a distance of 43 feet and 5 inches, while Mallard put the shot 43 feet and one-half inch.
Just missing the cut was Lady Mohawk Molly Daffron, as she finished third in the shot and fifth in the discus. And just out of the running for the boys, Fuller was third in the discus and Quinten Reeves was third in the high jump. The girl's 4x800 relay team of Seegraves, Denise Cury, Emily Massey and Georgina Bautista was third, the 4x400 relay team of Elizabeth Hobbs, Arriola, Massey and Cury was also third and Bautista ran fourth in the 1600.
