Memorial Day Observances Set

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Memorial Day services are set for Sunday, May 29, across the country with special ceremonies and observances. Included in the events are observances at both Rector and Piggott, set for Sunday afternoon.

The annual Memorial Day service will be held beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. The guest speaker will be Paul Schuerenberg, community employment coordinator for the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. A short message will also be presented by Josh Vangilder, of Antioch Baptist Church of Rector, and the local VFW post will be handling the wreath ceremony. The event will also include the annual financial report on the cemetery.

Volunteers will meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday under the big tree at Woodland Heights Cemetery to place flags on the graves of veterans in honor of Memorial Day. "Some school children are volunteering, but every person counts and volunteers are still needed," event organizer Betty Essmon said.

The Memorial Day service at the Piggott Cemetery will also get underway at 2 p.m. Sunday and will include the annual business meeting of the cemetery association. Fred Ort will give the financial update, and will also be offering this year's address. The opening and closing prayer will be given by Shawn Parker.

Members of the Piggott VFW post will also be handling the wreath ceremony for the local observance.

Memorial Day will be observed Monday, May 30, and as a result a number of closures have been announced. All local, county, state and federal governmental offices will be closed for the day. This includes both Clay County courthouses, the three county libraries, health units and the DHS office. Local city halls will also be closed, along with post offices and other federal facilities.

All of us at the CCTD encourage everyone to have a happy and safe Memorial Day holiday weekend.
