Site preparation for the new natural turf/track project at Piggott High School's Parker Field got underway last week. A crew from the Festus, Mo., area removed the old turf and prepped the location for the upcoming construction project. A caravan of 20 dump trucks then hauled hundreds of yards of chat, and other fill material, to prepare the field area and base for the six-lane track.

The installation of the new natural turf is expected to get underway late this week, and should go quickly if the weather continues to cooperate. That portion of the job is being done by a firm from Portageville, the same company which renovated several of the baseball diamonds at Independence Park.

During Monday night's Piggott School Board meeting, Superintendent Charlie Powell reported the plans for the track, concession stand and restroom facility and press box have been submitted to the state for approval.

Thousands of tons of fill material were used to elevate the playing surface of the PHS football field, and prepare the base for the proposed six-lane track. This view from the north endzone gives a good look at where the track will eventually be located, although it will likely not be completed until sometime after the football season.(TD photo/Tim Blair)

The current plan calls for completion of the turf part of the project this summer, and the installation of a pavement base for the track. The facilities will then be the next priority, with the track surface to be installed later in the coming school year.
