Fall High School Sports Underway

With classes now underway, the high school sports seasons are also beginning across the region. Along with football pre-season scrimmages, other fall sports athletes are also seeing action.

The Lady Mohawk volleyball squad, under new head coach Codie Lancaster, is slated to take part in a jamboree at Jonesboro this Thursday, Aug. 17. They'll be back in action at Newport on Monday, Aug. 22 and will host Harrisburg in the home opener on Thursday, Aug. 25. Meanwhile, the Mohawk tennis teams will begin their campaign under long-time coach Paul Seegraves on Tuesday, Aug. 23, with a non-conference tri-match at Jonesboro against the Nettleton Raiders and Beebe Badgers. They'll be back at Jonesboro on Thursday, Aug. 25, for sets against CRA, Earle and Walnut Ridge. This year the Bobcats are in the Tribe's conference, along with Harding Academy, Corning, Newport, Riverside and Cedar Ridge.

Football teams are also prepping for the early-September openers with scrimmages. The Piggott Mohawk senior high squad is currently scheduled to play in a jamboree at Trumann on Monday, Aug. 22, while the junior squad will play in a jamboree at Trumann Friday, Aug. 26. Monday's schedule includes a 6 p.m. scrimmage with Trumann and a 6:45 scrimmage with Marked Tree. Coached by long-time Mohawk assistant Michael Harrell, the junior squad will begin their season at Rector on Sept. 1, while the senior squad will begin their campaign on the road at Hazen on Friday, Sept. 3.

The Rector Cougars continue to prepare for the season at hand under Coach David Hendrix, and are slated to scrimmage the Corning Bobcats at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25. Following the junior high opener against the Mohawks, the Cougars will host Palestine-Wheatley on Friday, Sept. 3, at Temerian Field.
