Mohawk Golf Team in Early-Season Action
The 2016 high school golf season will serve as a rebuilding year for the Piggott Mohawk team, as Coach Alan Rabjohn will look to an enthusiastic, but slightly inexperienced, group. This year's boys team includes Ethan Holcomb, Isaac Langley, Jordan Simpson, Trey Gossett, Holden Tarno, Matthew Cheshire, Logan Allman and Dalton James. Playing for the girls team are Grayson Murray and Madison Rahn.
The squads have already been in early-season action, and Monday afternoon the boys played at Sugar Creek Country Club, in Piggott, although several players were involved in a football scrimmage at Trumann. As for the girls, Murray and Rahn were playing volleyball at Newport, and didn't compete.
The boys took part in a tri-meet with Hoxie and Marmaduke, with the Greyhounds pulling out the win while the Tribe was edged by Hoxie by three strokes for second.
Cheshire shot a 54 and Holcomb shot a 59 to pace the Tribe, while Luke Richey of Marmaduke took medalist honors with a 47. For the Mustangs, Hunter Holt and Spencer Decker both shot 57s to lead their team.
Also carding scores for the Mohawks were Holden Tarno and Dalton James, while other Marmaduke players included Austin Hendrix, River Raines and Trent Dowell. Meanwhile, Julie Foster, Hadleigh Bynum, Tessa Brown and Erin Newall competed for MHS in the girls bracket, along with Chelsea Fitzgerald of Hoxie. Medalist honors went to Foster with a 56, and as a team the Lady 'Hounds shot a 178.
Tuesday the Mohawk boys team was scheduled to visit Batesville for a match, and both squads will be in action next Monday, Aug. 29, at Sugar Creek Country Club. The following day, Tuesday, Aug. 30, they're slated to visit Corning.
