Mohawk Tennis Teams in Action
The Piggott Mohawk tennis teams were in action at home and on the road in the week prior to the Labor Day holiday, taking on a pair of larger schools in non-conference play. Tuesday they visited 4A Pocahontas, with the girls posting a tie and the boy's notching a win. Thursday they hosted 5A Paragould, and this time the boys tied and the girls earned a win.
Tuesday the squads were slated to visit the Rams at Paragould for a re-match, although results were not available as of press time.
The Lady Mohawks earned a 1-1 split with the Lady Redskins at Pocahontas last Tuesday, winning the singles match and then falling in doubles play. In singles, Emilee Seegraves beat Anna Baltz, who finished sixth in Class 4A last year, 6-1. Meanwhile, the doubles team of Kourtney Chadwell and ErinDixon fell to Sawyer Frazier and Brooke Scurlock 3-6 for the split.
As for the boys team, they split in singles play 2-2, but took the doubles competition 2-1 to gain the win. Posting singles wins were Josh Lyman over Lawton Hanson 6-3 and Andy Risner over Kyle Kaczmarski 6-1. Lyman and Carrington McDaniel also took their doubles match with Ty McDonough and Chase McInnery 6-3 while Kaleb Chadwell and Ashton Edwards beat Drew Capps and Brandt Carter 7-6 (7-3). The doubles loss went to Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer, as they fell to Jace Wren and Alec Smith 2-6.
Thursday afternoon the Tribe hosted the Rams in a rare home contest at the muncipal courts, and split with the squads from Paragould. Coach Paul Seegraves also reports Britany Hobbs was lost for the season, and McCaleh Faulk has been added to the roster.
In girls play, the Tribe split singles play with wins by Seegraves over Madi Wood 6-0 and Haily Bounds 6-0. Chadwell then dropped her set with Whitley Roberts 2-4 and Erin Dixon fell to Jenna Brittingham 1-4.
The Lady Mohawks took all four doubles sets, with Seegraves and Chadwell beating Claire Phillips and Faith Jankovick 6-0; Chadwell and Dixon downing Makena Timmons and Kenna McCormick 6-3; Seegraves and Dixon beating Kenlee Jameson and Katie Taylor 4-0 and Chadwell and Faulk beating Sadie Witcher and Anna Gazaway 4-2.
As for the boys team, they went 3-3, beating the Rams in singles play 2-1, then falling to the visitors by the same tally in doubles action. Singles winners were Higgins over Collin Kingston 6-4 and Noah Fuller over Davi Baquit 4-3, while Palmer fell to Shawn Price 1-6.
In doubles play it was Lyman and McDaniel over Kingston and Price 7-5, while Harris and risner fell to Kingston and Baquit 4-6 and Chadwell and Edwards fell to Baquit and Price 2-4.
Entering Tuesday's match the Lady Mohawks now stand at 4-1-1 on the season, while the boys team is now 3-2-1. The girls team was scheduled to take part in a tournament at Kennett this Saturday, but Seegraves reports the team has dropped-out of the bracket. They teams will be back in action at Jonesboro on Monday, Sept. 12, as they take on Harding Academy and Riverside in a conference tri-match at Allen Park. Seegraves also reports the set at Corning set for Tuesday, Sept. 13, has been rescheduled for the following Thursday, Sept. 22.
