Junior Mohawks Fall to Osceola
The Piggott Junior Mohawks suffered a major setback Thursday evening, as they lost a 42-0 decision at home to Osceola. But, for the Tribe the biggest heartbreak was the loss of running back Sky Wright, who left the game late in the first half with a broken collarbone. Coming out of the contest a number of the young Mohawks were battered and bruised, but there will be no break this week as the Rivercrest Colts come to town in 3A-3 play.
The Tribe won the coin toss, and got the ball first Thursday evening, with Drake Featherston returned the opening kickoff. As they had against Corning the previous week, the Mohawks began to try to put together a drive behind the running of Featherston and Wright. Quarterback Michael Parker picked-up the first down, but an offsides penalty on first down backed the home team up. The drive ended on fourth and 10, as the Mohawks lined-up to punt, but the snap sailed over Wright's head and he was dropped deep in Piggott territory.
The Seminoles picked-up a quick first down, then scored on a 14 yard run by Jamarian Coleman despite a hard hit by Piggott's Zac Gilbee at the goal line. The two point conversion attempt by Osceola was no good, and the score stood at 6-0 with four minutes to go in the first quarter.
Osceola scored their second touchdown from 44 yards out with 7:23 to go in the first half, but again the two point conversion attempt was no good. They scored again at the 3:22 mark of the second as a Parker pass was picked-off, and returned 60 yards for a touchdown. Once again the two point attempt was not good, as the score moved to 18-0 at the half.
The visitors added another tally to begin the second half, returning the kickoff 75 yards to paydirt. This time the run was good for the two-pointer, and the score stood at 26-0. Osceola scored from 35 yards out late in the third, and added a 75 yard touchdown in the fourth, to set the final score.
Gilbee came on in relief of Wright, leading the team in rushing with 51 yards on 12 carries, while Wright finished with 35 yards on 10 carries, Featherston had 14 yards on 6 carries and Logan Ralph had 11 yards on 5 totes. Parker was 0 for 2 with one interception. Total yards went to the Seminoles 232 to 131. Leading the Mohawks in tackles on the night was Alex Tharp with three.
With the loss the Junior Mohawks fall to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in 3A-3 conference play. They'll be back in action Thursday evening at Parker Field as the Rivercrest Colts visit Piggott. The seventh grade game will precede the junior high contest, and will kick-off at 5 p.m.
