Mohawk Tennis Seasons Wind-Down

The Mohawk tennis teams swept Earle and Marked Tree Monday, Sept. 19, at Allen Park in Jonesboro, then split with Corning at home last Tuesday.


The Tribe dominated the Earle Bulldogs, taking the girls match 3-1 and sweeping in boys play 5-0. Last year both squads were state qualifiers in 2A. For the girls team Emilee Seegraves took the lone singles match over Fiera Clark 6-0. In doubles play Kourtney Chadwell and Seegraves beat Clark and Azaryfa Logan 6-1; Chadwell and McCaleh Foulk then beat Tonarfa Banks 6-0 while Erin Dixon and Foulk fell to Clark and Logan 0-6.

The boys swept the Bulldogs with Caleb Higgins beating Matt Pigues 6-0 and Andy Risner beating Laurence Johnson 6-0 in singles play. In doubles action Josh Lyman and Carrington McDaniel beat Tre Harris and Zach Smith 6-1, Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer downed Trent Clark and Apollo Cummings 6-0 and Kaleb Chadwell and Ashton Edwards beat Kodell Murry and Devonte Hinton 6-0.

Marked Tree

The Mohawks also handled the Indians with ease, a team which finished in the top 10 in 2A last year in both boys and girls play. The Tribe was originally scheduled to play Cedar Ridge or Newport, but they had a conflict and Marked Tree filled-in.

The girls got singles wins from Seegraves and Chadwell, as they beat Aqulia Fulton and Julia Hudspeth both by finals of 6-0. Chadwell and Seegraves also be CJ Barnes and Mackenzie Boyd 6-0 in doubles play, while Dixon and Foulk beat Angel Barnes and Sydney Rotchied 6-4 and then beat Jayla Carter and Carrington Brown 6-0.

The boys also swept Marked Tree, with Caleb Higgins beating Dylan Lucas 6-0 in singles play, while Risner downed Jarrett Hartson 6-0. Lyman and McDaniel took their doubles set over Markel Perry Trayvious Brown 6-1 and Noah Fuller and Brier Staples beat CH Constant and Latrell Adams 6-0.


The Mohawks hosted Corning last week, with the boys earning the win while the girls split 3-3.

The boys squad took their match 4-3 by sweeping doubles play while Corning took the singles action. In singles play it was Staples with the lone win of 4-3 over Bryden Hewett, while Higgins fell to Clint Hovis 3-6, Risner also fell to Hovis 1-6 and Edwards was dropped by Lucas Barajas 1-4.

The doubles team of Lyman and McDaniel beat Hovis and Barajas 6-0, Harris and Palmer downed Barajas and Jewell 6-2 and Kaleb Chadwell and Fuller beat the same pair 4-2 to gain the win.

As for the Lady Mohawks, Seegraves posted a single win over Allison Landreth 6-0 then beat Kelsey Watson by the same tally. Chadwell fell in her singles match with Hannah Blankenship 3-4.

In doubles play Chadwell and Sophi Adams beat Tiger Lily and Blankenship 4-1 while Dixon and Foulk fell to Caitlyn Carpenter and Aleah Davis 0-6 and Chadwell and Alex McDaniel fell to Maggie Couch and Cara Johnson 0-6.

Going into this week's play the boys had extended their overall season record to 8-3-3 while the girls now stand at 7-5-2 on the year. They were slated to take on Harding Academy and Corning in confernce play at Jonesboro Monday, then visit Pocahontas in non-conference play on Tuesday, but scores were not available as of press time. They'll visit Corning Monday in a tune-up for the district tourney, set for next Thursday, Oct. 6, at Jonesboro. The state 3A tennis tournament will be held Oct. 17 and 18, at Burn's Park in North Little Rock. The state overall tourney is also at Burn's Park, and is set for Oct. 26 and 27.
