Deadline For Voter Registration Extended One Day

Thursday, October 6, 2016

Due to the Columbus Day Holiday, the cutoff date for registering to vote in the upcoming General Election has been extended to the end of business on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

"Since the cutoff was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 10, which is a holiday for some, we are extending the deadline to the end of business the following day," Clay County Clerk Pat Poole explained. "The new deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, for the 2016 General Election."

Poole noted that although Columbus Day is a holiday, the courthouse and her office will be open their usual hours.

"There was some discussion about whether we should extend the deadline since we would be open on the holiday," she explained. "But, the Secretary of State's office advised us to err on the side of the voters and go ahead and extend the deadline for those who come into the office or for registrations which are postmarked by Oct. 11."

Poole's staff in Piggott and Corning are also continuing to update voter records, and ask those who have moved, changed their name or need to confirm if they are an active voter to come by the office or call 870 598-2813.

Early voting will begin on Monday, Oct. 24, and the office will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Fridays. The office will also observe special Saturday hours, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the period. Early voting for this year's election will end at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7.

The following day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, the polls will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
