MHS Boy's Squad in Action
Marmaduke boys basketball coach Justin Ward notes he is pleased with his team's start to the season - especially given that injury and illness have hampered the Grehounds lineup thus far.
Reinforcement may be on the way. Marmaduke guard Bryson Horton was set to return Tuesday for the Greyhounds after missing time with a broken hand. "I'm anxious to see what he can do," said Ward, adding he believes Horton is among the best point guards in the area.
Horton was to rejoin a Marmaduke team that had split its first six games, evening its record at 3-3 with a 56-49 loss to Buffalo Island Central on Friday. The Greyhounds had lost 73-50 against Bay last Monday and had beaten Maynard 72-45 last Thursday before losing the tight contest against BIC.
Derek Agee led Marmaduke with 16 points, while Corey Burks added 13 and Jacob Caraway finished with seven points in the loss to the Yellowjackets.
Bay also won the junior boys game 46-38. Austin McCoy tallied 17 points for Marmaduke.
Marmaduke swept a pair of games at Maynard. The Greyhounds opened up a 38-22 lead at halftime and stretched the lead to 58-35 by the end of the third quarter in cruising to the 72-45 win.
Billy Elder finished with a game-high 22 points to lead Marmaduke, while Burks added 20 points and Agee finished with 13.
McCoy finished with 11 points, Garrett Hensley added 10 and Bradley Horton tallied nine as Marmaduke ran to a 49-19 victory over the Junior Tigers.
Buffalo Island Central pulled away from the Greyhounds in the second half of their varsity contest. The two teams were knotted at 12 points apiece at the end of the first quarter before BIC inched ahead by two, 21-19, by halftime. BIC outscored Marmaduke 16-13 in the third quarter to carry a 37-32 lead into the fourth quarter and then held off the Greyhounds by outpacing them 19-17 in the final period.
Agee scored 19 points to lead Marmaduke while Chad Hall chipped in with 13 points and Jonathan Webb finished with nine points.
Buffalo Island Central won the junior boys game 43-29 as the Junior Greyhounds lost for the second time last week in their game with the Mustangs.
The Marmaduke senior and junior boys teams were scheduled to host Sloan-Hendrix on Tuesday before the seventh-grade team plays in the Brookland Playday on Saturday. The junior boys compete in the Bay Junior High Tourney next week. The senior Greyhounds return to action next Tuesday at Sloan-Hendrix, with the junior boys playing at 4 p.m. that day at Imboden.
