Lady Cougars Drop Opener to Gosnell

Thursday, November 10, 2016

Rector rallied all the way back from a 12-point second-half deficit, but could not get over the hump in its season opener Monday, falling 62-47 in overtime at Gosnell.

The Lady Cougars trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter before Gosnell stretched the lead to 25-17 by halftime. The Lady Pirates outpaced Rector 9-5 in the third quarter to carry a commanding 34-22 lead into the final period.

But the Lady Cougars exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter to climb all the way back into a 47-all tie as time expired.

Foul trouble then caught up with Rector. Roughly a minute into overtime, the Lady Cougars were with only one starter still in the game. The Lady Pirates seized the opportunity and outscored Rector 15-0 in the extra period to regain the lead for good.

"It was tough going in overtime," said Rector coach Matt Dean. "But I'm proud of them. I thought we played well. Gosnell's a 4A school and we played them pretty tough."

Matison Dean tallied 26 points to lead the Lady Cougars, while sophomore Gabby Clark chipped in with 17 points. Dominique Coln finished with three points and Mylessa Gant added one point to round out Rector's offensive attack.

Gosnell won the junior girls game 36-18 as Breanna Thul led the Junior Lady Cougars with 11 points.

Rector picked up a 19-14 win in the seventh-grade game.

The Lady Cougars were to play at Ridgefield Christian on Tuesday before hosting Maynard on Thursday. The junior and senior girls are slated to start Thursday's games at 6 p.m. On Monday, Rector hosts Armorel in junior girls, junior boys, senior girls and senior boys games starting at 4 p.m.
