The Piggott Area Chamber of Commerce will host a special ribbon cutting ceremony at noon this Friday, Dec. 16, for the PHS Scurlock Gym--more commonly known as the "Old Gym." The building, easily the oldest school building in the area still in use, was dedicated on Friday, Dec. 13, 1946, and this week marks its 70th anniversary.

In recent years the interior was renovated, and artificial turf added to the former basketball court. The weight rooms were converted to dressing areas, and a meeting room, and new carpet was installed earlier this year. Additional technology equipment was also installed, thanks to a CenturyLink grant acquired by Head Football Coach Michael Harrell.

In addition to serving as the headquarters for the football and track programs, the building also provides a location for the district PE classes and allows the softball and baseball teams a facility for indoor practice. On any given day the majority of the high school's students will spend time in the building.

The former weight room has been converted into office space for the coaches, and is used as the film and meeting room for the football team. Other amenities for PE classes are also found in this area of the old gym. The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting, and the open house which will be going on throughout the noon hour. The gym is located one block south of East Main Street, on South Garfield Avenue, on the east edge of the high school campus.
