Mohawks Advance in Hoxie Mustang Classic

The Piggott Mohawks are taking part in the Hoxie Mustang Classic tournament, and have advanced to the finals in the championship bracket. The Tribe beat the Midland Mustangs in the first round Tuesday afternoon, then dispatched with Maynard Wednesday evening.

In the first round game the Tribe handled the Mustangs easily, jumping to a 25-9 lead after one en route to the 69-54 final. Four Mohawks were in double figues on the night, led by Quentin Reeves with 15, Brier Staples with 14, Trey Gossett with 12 and Peyton Mann with 11.

Wednesday night they jumped to a 17-3 lead after one, then withstood several Tiger runs to post the 53-32 win. Gossett and Mann both had 12 points unofficially, while Reeves finished with 10.

The Mohawks will play either top-seeded Hillcrest or Palestine-Wheatley, as they were slated to meet in the late game Wednesday in the other boy's semi. Hillcrest advanced with a 50-47 win over Newport while the Patriots got by the host Mustangs 40-30 in the other quarterfinal game.

All of the finals will be played Thursday, with the Mohawks slated to play in the final game of the day around 8:30 p.m.
