Beshears Paces Cougars in Kell Classic Win

Kirk Beshears scored 23 points to lead Rector (4-9) past Flippin 49-38 in the opening round of he Kell Classic at Swifton. Wednesday evening the Cougars fell to Pangburn 61-58 in the quarterfinals.

Flippin Game

Flippin jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Beshears hit two free throws for Rector to make it 3-2 Bobcats. The Bobcats hit a jumper as Trey Rodden answered for the Cougars with at three-pointer to make the score 5-5. Flippin scored down low only to see Rector get a three-pointer from Beshears and a basket inside from Max Ford giving the Cougars a 10-7 lead. Beshears added a jumper in the lane before the buzzer to extend the Rector lead to 12-7 after one.

Rector scored the first five points of the second quarter as Beshears hit two free throws with Sam Simmons scoring on a jumper, followed by one of two from the stripe, to make it 17-7 Cougars. Flippin hit one of two free throws, Cody Ails canned a three-pointer for Rector, the Bobcats scored inside as Beshears hit one of two free throws for the Cougars to make the score 21-10 Rector. The Bobcats were good on one of two free throws only to see Beshears convert an old-school three-point play making it 24-11 Rector. Flippin made two free throws, Ails answered for Rector with a three-ball as the Bobcats canned a three-pointer to make the score 27-16 Cougars. Beshears hit one of two free throws as Flippin hit one of two free throws and added a stick back basket making the score 28-19 Rector. Andrew Carter scored inside with just over a minute left for Rector as Flippin scored late in the quarter to make the score 30-21 Rector at the half.

The Bobcats opened the third quarter with a 6-2 run as Hunter McNeely hit a baseline jumper for the Cougars as Flippin closed to within 32-27. Rector scored the next six points as Simmons, Beshears and Easton Tracy all hit jumper to push the Cougars lead to 38-27. Flippin got a basket in the paint, Beshears drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key for Rector as the Bobcats hit of two free throws with less than a minute left to make the score 41-30 Cougars at the end of three.

Ford hit one of two free throws for Rector to start the fourth quarter before Flippin scored the next five points making the score 42-35 Cougars. Beshears got a basket inside for Rector, Ails added two frees before Beshears hit two free throws giving the Cougars a 48-36 lead. Flippin scored inside with half a minute left to play as Tracy added a free throw for Rector set the final score at 49-38 Cougars.

"I thought we did what we come in to do. We knew they had two big guys that would give us trouble if we didn't speed the game and I think we did a good job of that," Rector head coach Matt Mills said after the game. "We are struggling to finish games out because we've not been in that situation much. We looked nervous there at the end of the game," he added.

Ails added eight points for the Cougars as Simmons finished with five points. Tracy, Ford and Rodden all scored three points with McNeely and Carter chipping in two points each.

The Cougars now return to regular season play, and are scheduled to visit Sloan-Hendrix Friday along with the girls. Next Tuesday they'll travel to Cooter, Mo., to take on the Wildcats and on Friday evening they'll make the trip to Strawberry for a set with the Screamin' Eagles of Hillcrest.
